Our children are wired to want to communicate before bed. The bedtime routine brings feelings of intimacy and closeness, and it’s a time where they slow down enough to start processing and trying to make sense of their day, both of which can make a child feel more inclined to open up to parents and caregivers.
No matter how tired they (or we!) are, taking a few minutes to connect before the lights are out and you give the final kiss goodnight will help children feel safe, heard and loved, and will hopefully help them fall asleep faster and more peacefully.
